What are Near Beach Colleges?

Near-Beach Schools

For purposes of fairness, we are including some lake schools in our list of Near-Beach Schools-those that are beach-friendly, have sand and sun.

Beach Schools, or Near-Beach Schools, are not to be confused with Ocean Schools:

Ocean Schools are those colleges located near oceans, but without the “Beach scene/atmosphere. For instance, the many wonderful schools in Boston are near the ocean, but are not beach schools.

The University of Prince Edward Island, while in a beautiful place, and surrounded by ocean, is not a beach school.

The University of Hawaii, on the other hand, also on an island, and also surrounded by ocean, IS a Beach School.

You will notice that California State University at Humboldt, while located on the Pacific Ocean, with beautiful beaches, is an Ocean School, not a Beach School. It is way too cold up there to make the cut.

So, while there are some great schools on or near the ocean, such as the University of Alaska at Juneau, they do not meet all three requirements for beach, or near-beach schools: sun, sand, surf. (Emphasis on sun)

San Francisco State University

Note: The schools in San Francisco are right on the edge, definition-wise. People DO go there year-round, there are great beaches right in town, and plenty of sand and surf.

It's the sun/warmth part that is sometimes questionable. However about one hour south there are strings of beaches that fit the "Beach" or 'Near-beach" definitions.
